Born and raised in Ducktown, TN, Midge graduated from Ducktown High School, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from East Tennessee State University, and a Masters in Education from Ball State University.
She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Titusville (Fla) for over 50 years, and Ridgedale Baptist Church after moving to Chattanooga.
Upon graduating from ETSU in 1954, Midge began her teaching career as the US federal government recruited teachers to Titusville/Cocoa/Melbourne area of Florida. They were developing a new government entity, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), bringing thousands of engineers and scientists along with their families. She taught elementary school – primarily first and third grade – in the Brevard County school district for over 40 years. During that time, she took opportunities to teach in the military bases in Japan and Germany, returning after each to her home base of Titusville. Midge loved her students, and her students loved her. She enjoyed living near the coast and supporting the Space Program, incorporating it into her teaching over the years. She was awarded Brevard County Teacher of the Year in 1982 and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
One of Midge’s favorite things about living in Florida was visiting Disney World since its opening in 1971. She became known for her love of Mickey Mouse, held annual passes to Disney World until she moved away in 2007, and always donned something featuring Mickey Mouse, whether it was a shirt or a sticker on her motorized scooter.
Midge was preceded in death by her parents, H.E and Nora Brewer; siblings, Ben Brewer, Gilbert Brewer, Leroy Brewer, Niva Knutson, and Betty Beckler; nephews, Bennie (Janet) Brewer and John (Ginny) Brewer; nieces, Suzanne (Roy) Crane and Dolores Kimsey.
Having no children of her own, Midge considered her nieces and nephews her special ones, showering them with fond memories of fun times with her. Surviving are her nieces, Margaret (Randy) Frazier and Jane (Donnie) Bird; nephews, Frank (Phyllis) Brewer, James (Bonnie) Brewer, Roger (Marie) Beckler, and Jeff (PJ) Knutson. Midge was a lover of people and amassed many friends around the globe – each one incredibly special to her. Her favorite pastime was talking about the adventures she had with friends when living in Japan, Germany, Florida, and Tennessee.
A Celebration of Life will be held graveside at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Cleveland, TN on Saturday, June 29, 2024 at 11:00 AM EST. There will be no visitation.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Rosewood of Fort
Oglethorpe for their friendship, care, and compassion during the years that Midge – whom they affectionately referred to as “Midgey Mouse” – lived there. She loved each person and enjoyed their fellowship, and especially enjoyed playing Bingo!
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations would be appreciated to First Baptist Church of Titusville, 303 Main Street, Titusville, FL 32796; or Ridgedale Baptist Church, 1831 Hickory Valley Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421.
