Mr. Carnes was born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina. He was a graduate of North Charleston High School, a 13 year US Air Force Veteran having served in Vietnam, and a retired school bus driver. Robert was a member of the Vietnam Veterans Post 203 and loved lighthouses.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louise and Robert Carnes, Sr.; and sister, Carol Lester.
Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Karen Carnes; daughters, Stephanie (Shannon) Freeman and Denise (Jeremy) Cowperthwaite; sons, Christopher (Lakrina) Carnes, Timothy (Ashley) Carnes and Steven (Lesley) Carnes; 9 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.
A Graveside Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, December 31, 2020 at Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.
