Growing up in Scarsdale, New York, he attended Scarsdale High School and Westchester Community College. He joined the U.S. Navy and was discharged in 1977. After a stint in Carlin, Nevada, Charlie settled in Dallas, Texas, where he established and ran Rubens Automotive for many years.
Charlie's love of cars and all things mechanical was expressed in building and racing Formula V 2000's. As early as high school Charlie manifested a special talent for fixing cars. He rebuilt from scratch a number of VW "Bugs" with no lift nor formal training. The challenges associated with repairing and restoring "whatever" rolled into the shop gave him great pleasure.
Charlie loved the outdoors - he was a hunter and avid fisherman who tied his own flies. He spent several summers at Camp Chippewa for Boys in Cass Lake, Minnesota, and he skied with the rest of his extended family during annual holiday vacations in Colorado.
During the last several years Charlie was fiercely devoted to the care and aid of his stepdaughter, Eliana, leading her battle against kidney disease. His tireless advocacy culminated in Eliana's successful kidney transplant this past summer.
Charles is survived by his wife, Sagrario, her daughter, Eliana, his parents Mary and Charles Rubens II of Scarsdale, NY, his sister, Molly Nunnelly of San Antonio, TX, brothers Peter, of Novato, CA and David of Smyrna, GA.
A private service will be held.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Camp Chippewa for Boys Foundation. The foundation is located at 11427 N. Pinehurst Circle, Mequon, WI 53092-3544. Donations may also be made to the Methodist Dallas Medical Center: ATTN. Kidney Transplant Center, 1441 N. Beckley Ave. Dallas, TX 75203
