Cecilia Flores Duenas, age 87, passed away peacefully March 06, 2019 due to extending complications from surgery. She was born April 10, 1931 in Agana, Guam MI. to Angel Leon Guerrero and Maria Quitugua Flores. She married her love, Jesse San Nicolas Duenas, who was from Inarajan, Guam, on Feb 19, 1949. Now they are reunited as Jesse has preceded her in death on Aug 13, 2011.
Cecilia (Chilang) was born and raised in Guam. After losing her father during WWII, Cecilia was thrust into a maternal role, helping her mother take care of her five younger siblings. A responsibility she gracefully embraced until just recently. In marriage, she was a dedicated military wife, moving every 2-3 years with the family of 6 children, traveling from coast to coast.
Always considering their children first and foremost, they eventually retired in Chula Vista, CA to remain close to all of their kids. It was no secret that Cecilia loved her role as mother and grandmother. She unselfishly gave her time and energy to each and every one of them. Whether it was cooking their favorite dish for dinner, throwing them a birthday party at her house or picking them up for school. One thing is for sure Cecilia was always present.
Cecilia loved to love on people as the Chamorro people do. Her vivacious and at times sassy personality always made the people around her laugh. She was generous not only with her family, but her community. Cecilia served as an active member at the Sons and Daughters of Guam Club for many years.
Cecilia graduated from George Washington High School in Guam and received her associate degree from San Diego Community College. For many years Cecilia worked at the Brody (Special Needs School) in Guam, the United Pan Asians Community (UPAC) in San Diego and retired from the Department of the Navy (Federal Civil Service).
Her life was a living example of this Bible verse, Ephesians 4:32 — “And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.”
Cecilia is survived by her brother and wife T. Frank and Lee Flores, sisters Carmen LaVelle and Aurora Flores; her four sons and their spouses, Dexter and Nita Duenas, Jesse R Duenas and Jo Ellen Kleindienst, Timothy Duenas, Andrew Duenas.
