John Paul Bibbo, 81, of Chula Vista, California, peacefully passed away into the arms of his Heavenly Father on March 26, 2015. His wife, Zan Bibbo, and their six children were by his side. He was born to Anthony Bibbo and Maria G. Lantella on June 22, 1933, in Newton, Massachusetts.
John is survived by and very much loved by Zan, his wife of 52 years, their six children (Maria, Joe, Amy, Jack, Mark and Grace), their spouses (Carl, Marty, Jennifer, Megan, Adriel, and Eric) and twenty grandchildren; sister, Lucy Kiley, sister, Ann Bibbo; a very special community of faith friends and many close friends.
John enjoyed life to the fullest. He loved sailing, golf, gardening, traveling with Zan, the love of his life, and most of all being with family. As a loving father and husband he led his family as a man of faith in Christ Jesus his Lord and he has left a spiritual legacy for many generations to come. He was a father who was intimately and actively involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren. Alongside his wife, he treasured the role of being Pa and Nana to their twenty grandchildren.
John earned a Bachelor of Science in Math at Boston University and a Master of Science in Meteorology at University of California, Los Angeles. He served as a Weather Reconnaissance Officer in the Air Force.
John was employed as a math, computer science and astronomy professor for thirty years (1966-1996) at Imperial Valley College and Southwestern College. His educational and military experience allowed him to also enjoy a private sector career at SAIC.
John was recognized for many skills and areas of volunteer service. He received the Hall of Fame Award in the Math Department at Southwestern College, he was a Knights of Columbus member, he served on the Western Association Scholastic and Adult Education Committees, he proudly served on the Marian Booster Board, and was a faithful hospice volunteer at Sharp HospiceCare.
By most people, he will be remembered for his faithfulness in serving as Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at St Pius X Parish and as a Cursillo member for 50 years proclaiming that God in Christ loves us.
He was fond of the prayers and writings of Thomas Merton who once said, “Every moment and every event of every man’s life on earth plants something in his soul.” John embraced the moments in life such as enjoying one of his fantastic martinis while watching a beautiful sunset.
Most of all, he was a man who understood God’s gift of life on earth and eternal life in Christ.
The memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on April 10, 2015 at St Pius X Parish, 1120 Cuyamaca Avenue, Chula Vista, CA. Father Joe Maser will be officiating.
