John P. Reilly, 80, of San Diego, Calif., passed on Tuesday, July 6, 2010, while vacationing at Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey. Born in Jersey City, he joined the U.S. Navy and served for 22 years, retiring as Master Chief and settling in San Diego in 1966.
He was the owner and president of Propulsion Controls Engineering ship repairs, based in San Diego since 1974. Jack served as president of the Propeller Club Port of San Diego and was honored as "Man of the Year" in 1992. For many years he was a regional delegate to the International Propeller Club of the United States. He was also active in the San Diego Ship Repair Association and was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association in Chula Vista. During his Navy career he served as the highest ranking enlisted officer on the USS Claude V. Ricketts during the NATO mixed-manning demonstration 1964-1965.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Janet L. (nee Young); his six children, John P. and his wife Lori, Mark, Matthew, Timothy and his wife Ana, Susan Reilly, and Kathleen and her husband Robert Reid; six grandchildren, Erica, Vanessa, Skylar, Olivia, Luke and Lauren; and his two brothers and three sisters, Gerald, Brian, Jean Owen, Arlene Farawell and Mary Beth Herits.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Humphrey Mortuary, 753 Broadway, Chula Vista, with inurnment to be held later at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
