Olga was born on May 5, 1931 in Mexico City, Mexico. Her mother died when she was very young, so her father Pedro Romero entrusted Olga and her sister Emma into the care of his "Compadres", to avoid having them go to an orphanage. At the age of fourteen, Olga met Juan Gutierrez in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, and they married soon after. Hoping to begin their new life together in America, they immigrated into the United States when she was fifteen and they began working in the cotton fields in Madera, California. They had five children. Esperanza, Rachel, Andres, Gloria, and Mikey. Olga also lost one child due to miscarriage. After lots of hard work they settled their family into their first home in National City, California and raised their family.
In Olga's early years, she was a homemaker and belonged to the Sociedad Guadalupana, Our Lady of Guadalupe Society Catholic Women's Group. Their mission was to offer leadership in social issues, perform charitable works, further spiritual and material growth within the parish, spread devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe, prayer, evangelization, and support the development of female leadership within the Catholic Church. She had a great passion for this work.
Olga's hobbies and interests also included going to the gym, making flour tortillas, make up, and skin care. In her later years, she enjoyed making her bracelets, knitting blankets for her grandchildren, playing casino games, watching Wheel of Fortune, Grumpy Old Men (part two with Sophia Loren!), and her favorite daily movie Titanic!
She also enjoyed reading her prayer books, eating ice cream cones, eating tamales, and visits with her family.
After suffering a stroke in '2000, she was cared for by her devoted daughter Esperanza for her final twenty-five years. She died on 4/6/2025. Olga is survived by four of her children, nineteen grandchildren, thirty-three great grandchildren, and seven great-great grandchildren who all love and miss her very much.
"Like the pain felt from the sharp edging of the "Cotton Plants", always remember in life's difficult moments, the soft cotton that always followed, like a Mother's Tender touch”
