

He passed away on January 26, 2020 in San Diego, California. He attended the Medford schools and earned his BS in Electrical Engineering at Oregon State University. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in August 1942. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant through the Army's Aviation Cadet Program at Yale University in March 1944. He was released from active duty in June 1946 but remained in the reserve until recalled to active duty with the Air Force in March 1951.
His 31 year plus military career spanned three wars, WWII, Korean and the Viet Nam wars. He was stationed in the Marianas Islands and The Philippines during WWII. Later assignments included locations in Europe, Southeast Asia and a number of locations in the Continental United States. He retired from the United States Air Force in June 1974 following a four year tour in Washington D.C. Colonel Fifer was a graduate of the Air Command and Staff School, The Armed Forces Staff College and the Department of Defense Management School .
After retiring from the Air Force, he moved to Newport Beach, Ca where he reside for 30 years. He was employed by the Rockwell Corporation as a Program Manager for ten years, after which he began another career as a Community Volunteer. He was associated for five years with the Newport-Mesa Schools Foundation where he served as a Director. He was a volunteer at the Marines Library for over 15 years, and after attending the Newport Beach Citizens Police Academy, he performed service as a Volunteer Police Officer for four years. He was a member of the air Force Associations, the Military Officers Association, Hoag Hospital's 552 club, Newport Mesa Lodge #604 and American Legion Post #0291.
Colonel Fifer moved to the Solera Subdivision, Beaumont, Ca in the summer of 2004 then to San Diego, Ca until his passing. He leaves his wife, Maria Ramirez Fifer of San Diego, Ca a daughter Susan Fifer Canby of Clarksville, Md a son John Fifer Of Amesville, Ohio, a daughter Sally Jo Fifer of San Francisco, Ca, a step-daughter JoAnn Warren of Sienna, Italy. Colonel Fifer was predeceased by his sister Mrs. Jay Hoppe of Minden, Nevada. A grave site ceremony at the Miramar National Cemetery will be held. The family request that donations be given to veterans group of your choice in lieu of flowers.
