Bob Stanton passed on February 26, 2012, with his family by his side. He was born August 10, 1938 in Cleveland, Ohio to his parents John Carl Stanton and Marion Eleanor McInerny. He is survived by his brother: William, sons: John, Bobby, and Ken, daughter: Debra, grandchildren: Michael, Megan, Jordan, Faith, and Hope, and wife: Dawn.
Bob retired from the United States Navy in 1980 as a Chief Petty Officer after 23 years as a Radioman. Bob enjoyed many ports of call during his service. His proudest moment was "to be an American in a foreign port, saluting the American flag while the Anthem played." His first enlistment was on the USS George Clymer docked in Yokosuka, Japan and second enlistment was on the USS Bradley. He served in Hong Kong, Japan and the Philippines during which times he married Susie, mother of his eldest son, John, and Noli, mother of his three other children, Bobby, Kenny, and Debbie. Upon his retirement from the Navy, Bob focused his energies on becoming an educator. However, his passion for the game of basketball steered him towards coaching the game he loved. He believed basketball was the ultimate sport where “Everything you need to know about life, you can learn on a basketball court." He coached many winning teams, including a CIF Championship while coaching Coronado High School. However, Bob found his most rewarding achievements were the influences he had on so many young people while coaching. He always enjoyed "hearing how the kids’ lives turned out after basketball and hoped he had a positive impact on them.”
Besides the love for basketball his true loves in life were his grandchildren: Michael, Megan, Faith, Jordan and Hope. However, it is fair to say by the Stanton men that his daughter Debbie was the apple of his eye. He loved watching her play the sport he loved and will continue on watching over all his loved ones and their endeavors.
Some of Bob’s other notable achievements were stand-up comedian and novel author of the Sayonara Heart.
These last few years were notably unforgettable as he was surrounded by his grandchildren and his wife, Dawn who is credited for giving him "the happiest years" of his life.
His memory will live on forever through his children and grandchildren.
