Ruben Castorena Gonzales was born in Upland, California on March 28, 1936 to his parents, Luis and Guadalupe. He was the second of six children in the Gonzalez family. He married Helen Coats on October 12, 1968 in Imperial Beach, CA.
In the mid-1960’s, Helen began studying the Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses. She was thrilled by the delightful truths she was learning, and symbolized her dedication to God in 1968. But Ruben did not initially share the same enthusiasm for the Bible as Helen did. However, he gradually responded to the patient, loving efforts provided by mature Christian men to help him apply Scriptural principles in his life and make dramatic changes in his personality. Eventually, in 1969, he also chose to become a dedicated, baptized servant of Jehovah. Thereafter, he devoted much time and effort to our Grand Creator and the advancement of pure worship.
Together, Ruben and Helen helped many to learn Bible truths and improve their lives. He was especially known as being generous, hospitable, and always willing to assist those in need. Being a plumbing contractor, Ruben freely volunteered his skills on countless Kingdom Hall and Assembly Hall projects in the San Diego Area. To this day, these centers for Divine education continue to benefit thousands of sincere Bible students every week. Ruben was pleased to pass on to his son and grandson, not only his professional skills, but valuable life-lessons that are deeply cherished by them today.
Ruben is survived by his beloved wife Helen; son Sergio; step-daughter Alicia Marino; step-son Charles English; grandson Sergio Jr; and granddaughter Erica English along with her mother Irene. Ruben also leaves behind his sisters Mary R. Dean and Lilia C. Casillas; as well as brothers Arturo and Joe Luis Gonzalez. Ruben’s parents and brother Alex preceded him in death. Many other grandchildren, in-laws, and dear friends share in grieving the loss of Ruben.
Ruben’s heartfelt desire would be that all his dear family members and friends will be in God’s peaceful New World to welcome him back in the resurrection.
“Do not be amazed at this, for all those in the memorial tombs will hear [Jesus’]
voice and come out.” (John 5:28, 29)
“And [God] will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more,
neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be any more. The former things have
passed away.” (Revelation 21:4)
