Born on April 17, 1935, Dave grew up in San Francisco, with parents Carmen and Felix Castro, his brother Carlos, sisters Carole and Anita. Dave had many happy times there. He and his brother Carlos used to ride their flexi up and down the Castro Street Hills. Later in his life he was united with his biological father Louis Munguia and was happy to discover that he had 5 siblings living in San Francisco, namely Annette, Louise, Dorothy, John and Elaine. They welcomed him into their family. They always kept in touch and he enjoyed going to family gatherings.
He went to Mission High School and while he was there, the family moved to Marin County. He missed his friends so much that he commuted with his dad each day so he could graduate with them. He acquired lifelong friends from his school days and the "old neighborhood". He always tried to keep in touch with them.
After Dave's graduation in 1953, he joined the navy in order to keep up a tradition in the Castro family. He served aboard the USS Lewis 535 and was honorably discharged in 1957. During this time, he became a boxing champion, a sport he would enjoy for the rest of his life. Dave tried to attend his ship's reunion whenever he could and was looking forward to going to this years reunion in Memphis.
After his discharge, Dave returned to the Bay Area and went to barber college. Among other places, he worked at the SF Airport in the VIP lounge and cut hair for many celebrities.
He married Sherry Bishop in 1960, They had three daughters, Debbie, Diane and Sheri.
In the early 70's Dave opened his first barber shop "The Den Barber Shop" in Pleasant Hill. Eventually they moved to Citrus Heights and opened his 2nd barber shop "Dave's Haircutting Shop" where he continued to be a barber for 60 years. He had fiercely loyal following of devoted customers. Some of his customers went to him their whole life, brought their children and grandchildren to him, and he would cut their hair regularly for three generations. He was considered the family barber to many.
All through his life he enjoyed playing music with the gift of playing by ear. He could play the vibes, piano, keyboard, bass and bongo drums. He kept all those instruments in his house to play and for when the family came to visit. Family visits would always turn into a jam session. He came from a musical family and loved to entertain. He played at many senior nursing homes, he especially enjoyed playing during the holidays where he was accompanied by his granddaughter Jennifer singing Christmas Carols.
In 2009, Dave remarried to Verna DeMartis a high school classmate and friend. Together they traveled to music and film festivals and enjoyed spending time with family and watching their grandchildren
