There is not a more beautiful sight than to watch that of a sunset, because the beauty is knowing that as one moment in time ends, another is just beginning beyond the horizon. This is true with life, because on September 5, 2014, God saw fit to give David a beautiful sunset, and as his friends and loved ones enjoyed the beautiful lights descend across the sky, his Heavenly Father and His Angels above welcomed him into a new dawn beyond the horizon. David William Woods was born in Colorado City, TX to William and Mattie Woods on April 25, 1938. He was educated in the Colorado City Independent School District, graduating from Wallace High School.
Although David excelled in basketball and track, his father was a proponent of academics- it was basketball that earned him an athletic scholarship to Butler College, where he attended for three years. He spent his Senior year at Bishop College; first in Marshall, TX and completed his education at the Dallas, TX campus- graduating in 1961 with an academic GPA of 2.89 (on a 3.0 scale) and his athletic prowess with a 23.6 average per game, 6.3 rebound average and a 89% free- throw average. His most important college success was centered around a special moment. During his senior year, Bishop College was in a crucial game that would elevate their team to the conference tournament. There was an essential element which played a vital role to his personal excitement, which led to the 31 points that were scored in 3½ periods of play, leading to their win. He later furthered his education in Education Administration- attending the University of Texas (Austin, TX), University of Texas Permian Basin (Odessa, TX) and Texas Tech University (Lubbock, TX).
David spent 36 years in education- one year with Karnack Independent School District and 35 years with Colorado City Independent School District. During his time he spent 31 years as an English Teacher and his last 5 years as a Secondary Administrator. He retired on June 5, 2000 with his loving wife, Billie Marie Woods.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Billie Marie.
Those left to rejoice in his memory are his sons- David, Jr., Kevin and Kenon; grandchildren- Keaundra Simington and Kenyatta Marie Woods; and a host of loving family and dear friends.
David was a man of great strength and support who has been a part of many lives though the years. He was one who always seemed to give us that bit of wisdom and encouragement that only David could. He has been a great influence to us all- collectively and individually- and will be truly missed. So as we celebrate his life on this side of his sunset, know that he has been reunited with Ms. Billie, who welcomed him with open arms and love. Today, we send his earthly remains back as God has instructed us to do, but the spirit and memories of David will follow us for many days to come.
