Douglas was born on March 22, 1963 To JD and Helen Fortenberry in Colorado City, Texas.
If you knew Doug, you know that he was a phenomenal man with a heart of gold and a fight in him like no one else. When Doug was 21 years old he was in a life changing motorcycle accident that paralyzed him from his waist down. He never let that stop him. He decided to live his life to the fullest and be an inspiration to others. Everything Doug did, he did with all of his might. He got his masters degree in education. He played in a wheelchair basketball league, He would hunt, and fish, and traveled the US as well as to other countries. There is nothing he would let this disability stop him from doing. Doug was passionate about helping others, in particular his students. He took great pride in his profession as a school counselor. He loved helping the kids overcome their obstacles in life and to push themselves to be their best. Doug loved his nephew and niece and was always an encouragement and support to them through every season in life. Doug was best friends with his brother Jimmie, and cousins, Gary and Trey Womack. They always lived their lives together, hunting and fishing and out in the wild. One thing that was very dear to Doug was his love for God which he was very open to share about. Before he passed he was very much at peace knowing that he would be going to be with Jesus.
He is survived by his step father Joe D. Merrick as well as his nephew Jerrell Shane Sprowl and his wife Beatriz and their 3 sons, Ezequiel, Hezekiah, and Ezra as well as his niece Shana Lynn Dunsmuir, her husband Rory and their daughter Isabella.
A graveside service for Doug will be held on Thursday, April 9th at 11 am in the Colorado City Cemetery.
