

COLUMBIA Amanda Zewadski Smith, age 93, died Saturday, January 24, 2015, of natural causes at her home. She had been a resident of Columbia since moving from St. Augustine, Fla. in 2010. Born May 10, 1921 in Miami, Fla., she was the daughter of the late Olaf and Irene Dayton Zewadski. She attended Florida State College for Women (now Florida State University), earning a Bachelor’s of Science degree in 1942. Amanda loved music and the arts, travel, and animals, and gave those gifts to her children. She embarked on her first European trip by bicycle shortly after the end of WWII, and loved returning, especially to Paris. She always wanted to return to her native Florida, and after raising a family in Mass., she retired to Florida from 1991 to 2010. She is survived by a daughter, Devon Smith Allen and her husband, Paul Simeon Allen of Gaithersburg, Md.; a son, Steven Wilson Smith of Ocala, Fla.; a daughter, Shelley Amanda Smith and her husband, George L. Geckle III of Columbia; and a son, Christopher B. Martin of Okla. She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Wilson Ring Smith. She is also survived by her second family, her wonderful caregivers of five years at Agape Kathwood in Columbia. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
