

COLUMBIA - Annabel “Ann” Reed, wife of Columbia physician Dr. Stanmore Edward Reed (deceased) passed away on Thursday, December 31, 2020, at Wellmore of Lexington. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 4, 2021 in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
Born the youngest daughter of Annabel Sharpe Whaler Wessels and Walter Kimberly Wessels in Atlanta, GA, Ann lived in many locations with her father’s air traffic controller career and eventually settled in Sullivan’s Island, S.C., most recently living in Hopkins, S.C. She was a 1964 graduate of Winthrop College with a BA in English. She married Dr. Stan Reed on June 21, 1964, in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and they were married 46 years until his death.
In 1991, she obtained her Master’s of Library & Information Science with an emphasis on children’s literature from the University of South Carolina. She was active at Rosewood Baptist Church and Beulah Baptist Church serving in the nursery and teaching children’s choir and Sunday School. Her hobbies included sewing, reading, gardening, and genealogy research. She prized reading and would always pick up a book or magazine for you when she was in town – especially after her weekly trip to the beauty parlor or the Piggly Wiggly. She loved spending time at the mountain house up on Beech Mountain, with her family.
Ann is survived by her five children, Emily Reed Baratta, MSM, and husband, Doug of Holly Springs, N.C., Beth Reed Geer, MD, of Thomasville, GA, Stanmore Edward Reed, Jr. of Columbia, S.C., Julie Anne Reed, MD, and husband, Gordon Mayfield of West Columbia, S.C., and David Reed of Charlotte, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Jordan, Hunter, and Taylor Baratta of Holly Springs, N.C., Kelsey and Hannah Geer and Joseph Garmon of Thomasville, GA, Reed Mayfield of West Columbia, S.C., Hayden Reed of Charlotte, N.C.; twin sisters, Julie Simons (Mayrant) of Durham, N.C., and Elizabeth Herron (Roy) of Starr, S.C.; brother-in-law, George Reed (Fran); and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband; her parents; her daughter-in-law, Brooke Reed; her mother-in-law, Lila Reed; and her brothers-in-law, Robert Reed (Sandra) and Joe Reed (Barbara).
