Born in Cherokee, Oklahoma, in 1937, to Warren A. Dillon and Ruth Stein Dillon, Bert’s family moved to Lamar, Colorado, where he attended high school. Bert served his country in the United States Army. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree at the University of Colorado at Boulder, his master’s degree at Columbia University, and his doctorate at Duke University.
Bert was a professor of English literature at the University of South Carolina for more than 30 years, specializing in Chaucer, and served as chair of the English Department.
Bert was predeceased by his sister, Donna Lee Thomas and his brother, John Dillon. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Susan Goodwyn Wienefeld Dillon; his son, Geoffrey Dillon, and Geoffrey’s wife, Renee; as well as cousins, nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel on Thursday, December 5, 2024 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
