She was born in Columbia on August 25, 1930, to Ralph and Ethel Carter Mayfield. When she was twelve, the family moved across the river to Cayce. At this time, Carol became a member of State Street Baptist Church. She attended Brookland Cayce High School and after graduation she began her career in the Accounting Department of Southern Bell in Charlotte, North Carolina. Several months later when the S. C. Accounting Records and functions were relocated to Columbia, Carol returned home. She continued to work for Southern Bell and over the years held several different assignments and retired in October 1987, from the position of S. C. Cost Accounting manager.
Carol’s faith journey began at Park Street where she was baptized at ten years old. In 1967, she attended St. Andrews Lutheran Church and served as treasurer for two years before moving to the Forest Acres area. Carol then transferred to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She served faithfully in many capacities including eight terms on the church council. Carol continued through life with her love for Brookland Cayce High School by serving on the Brookland Cayce Foundation Board until her health began to restrict participation.
Carol enjoyed traveling especially in the S. C. beach area of Sullivan’s Island where, as a child, she enjoyed time with her mother. She was an avid golfer and spent many hours at the Charwood Golf Club. She also enjoyed fishing at Lake Murray and the piers in the Surfside and Garden City areas.
Surviving and remembering Carol with love and giving thanks for sharing her earthy life are Jack and Miriam Hollis, neighbor and friends for over fifty years, Kim and Mike Lanier, who managed and attended to all Carol’s medical needs, and Sheryl Watford, who provided faithful assistance and gentle, loving care through many months of constant attention. Other surviving members of Carol’s adopted family include Bradley, Elizabeth, and John Lanier, Ben, Donna, Preston and Lakyn Haigh, Linda Taylor and Jean Cockrell. Also, surviving is Diane Smith of Saluda, S.C.
A memorial service will be held for Carol Mayfield at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 3909 Forest Drive, Columbia S.C., at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 2021. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The Women’s Shelter, The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Youth Group, or the Brookland Cayce Foundation.
