
COLUMBIA - Charles A. Henderson, 86, of Columbia, died Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Providence Hospital. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Born in Greenwood on November 23, 1928, he was the son of the late Charles A. Henderson and Kathryn Calvert Henderson. Mr. Henderson graduated from Lander University in Greenwood, S.C. where he served as student body president. It was there that he met his wife, Mary. Upon graduation from Lander, they moved to Columbia where he obtained a M.A. in history from the University of South Carolina. He taught history in Richland School District One for 33 years. Thirty-one of those years were spent at Dreher High School. He also taught night school at Columbia College and Fort Jackson and adult education at Columbia High School. He was a long time member of Shandon Baptist Church. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Mary Mitchell Henderson; son, Charles Mitchell Henderson (Amber) of Atlanta, Ga.; daughter, Donna Henderson Sprung (David, deceased) of Columbia; grandson, David Sprung of Columbia; and granddaughters, Audrey and Lauren Henderson of Atlanta, Ga. He is also survived by nieces, Ronni Capici Wall of Ridgeland and Kathy Capici Porter of Hilton Head Island. He was predeceased by his sister, Kathryn Henderson Capici. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, October 18, 2015, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Good Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in Saluda at 4:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to Shandon Baptist Church, 5250 Forest Drive, Columbia, SC, or to a charity of one’s choice.
