COLUMBIA - A Mass of Christian Burial for Charline M. Brandt, 88, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, 2024 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting with the funeral arrangements.
Ms. Brandt died Saturday, May 25, 2024. Born in Fort Benning, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Pauline Elizabeth Bowdoin Brandt. She graduated from Dreher High School and continued her education at the University of South Carolina, completing a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She started her career working for the University and then moved to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) where she retired after 35 years.
Charline’s father served in the Army Air Corps during its transition to a separate service. She travelled with her family to various bases, including Fort Benning, Georgia; the U.S. Marine Hospital, Norfolk, Virginia; Dyersburg Air Field, Tennessee; Barksdale Field, Louisiana; Goodfellow Field, Texas; and Ellington AFB, Texas. A self-described Air Force “brat,” she had a lifetime kinship with the military, and it led her to Fort Jackson and the US Army Chaplain Corps Museum where she volunteered faithfully for 13 years, only stopping when her health became an issue. She loved working with the chaplains and the staff, and she quickly became an important and unforgettable part of the chaplain community. In 2008, she was inducted into the Fort Jackson Volunteer Hall of Fame, an honor she deeply treasured.
Charline also generously shared her time with the Senior Mentor Program at USC’s School of Medicine, and the Fortress Christian Coffee House. She loved cheering for Notre Dame, the Pittsburg Steelers, and the University of South Carolina. She was the proud owner of many adored cats, but Joey was her favorite.
She was predeceased by her dear friend Anne Liss and her step brother Robert Brandt. She is survived by a nephew Robert Brandt of Newton Falls, Ohio.
Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church.
