

ELGIN - A funeral service for Clarence “Chuck” Chavis, 84, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 5, 2019 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Chavis passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2019. Born in Gibson, N.C. on July 27, 1934, he was a son of the late William Chavis and Carrie Carter Chavis.
Chuck retired from the U.S. Army after 22 years serving as a military police officer and CID Agent, and also served in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. His passion for law enforcement continued as a former Police Chief of Elgin and former Municipal Judge in Kershaw County. He was a member of Union Baptist Church.
Surviving are his daughter, Debra Chavis (Taylor Dyer); granddaughter, Kayleigh Chavis (Jaime Zurita); great-grandson, Zye Chavis Zurita; great-granddaughter, Ezi Louise Zurita; nephews, Ronnie Morris (Janie) and Mitchell Chavis (Mary Ann). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Lou Morrison Chavis and son, Darryl Chavis.
