Clyde Harry "Chige" Young of Columbia SC passed away on Thursday, October 3, 2024 surrounded by the love of his 3 daughters. Prior to the last 25 years in South Carolina he resided in Miami Florida for 45 years. However, Washington Pa. was his beloved home town.
Chige was born March 5, 1930 to the late Clyde C. and Laura Anthon Young. He graduated from Washington High School in 1949 where he played football and became buddies with teammates who became lifelong friends. He loved being on the wrestling team but was most proud of his brother and teammate Donnie who won 2 WPIAL championships. He often mentioned how nervous he was watching Donnie much more than wrestling himself.
Chige was a long-haul trucker for many years...and therefore practiced excellent driving skills which he "bestowed" on his daughters. He tolerated no cell phones in car or OFF, no eating in the car, and hands at 10 and 2. He mentioned those on his last car ride!
Dad enjoyed many things in life but most especially SPORTS....especially football and golf. He was proud to have coached Midget League Football at Sixth Ward School in Washington Pa. some 65 year ago. The team was "outstanding" and actually produced 3 or 4 guys who went to the NFL! He loved the Miami Hurricanes, Florida Gators, and USC Gamecocks but mostly and forever the Steelers and Dolphins (urging his kids to put aside homework on Sundays to watch them!). His love for golf gave him great memories at Miami Springs Golf Course and later at the Mid Carolina Club Senior Group (where he made his last hole in one). A real highlight was when he went to the Masters to see "Tiger and all the old guys". Most recently he was proud of Great Nephew Cole Young for being drafted to MLB from High School.
Dad also loved old movies most notably Ben Hur and Shane which his children were "suggested" to watch quite often over the years.
Dad lost many family members and friends ......most especially his Dear Virginia Gardner Young who passed after 50 years of marriage in 1997. His brother Donnie passed in 2016. He was so happy to still have his Cousin Thelma Jean Piatt and friend Nick Demus and nephews Ricky Young and Scott Hallam and niece Karen Tarentino to talk to by phone occasionally.
He is survived by daughters Laura Griese of Columbia SC, Susan Lasseter (Larry) of Port St Lucie FL, and Amy Schwartz of Pembroke Pines FL. Grandchildren include Sheri Ardente (Vinnie), Bryan Lasseter (Lily), Sarah Fischer (Michael), Erin Griese, Amy Joy Schwartz, and Jordan Schwartz. His great grandchildren were his greatest joy: Korrina Ardente, Bryan, Jason and Ashley Lasseter, Jonathan Schwartz, Emmaline Griese, Braeden and Kate Fischer.
A private interment will be held at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church Memorial Garden at a later date. Memorials may be made to Spring Valley Presbyterian Church for the Garden Fund 125 Sparkleberry Lane Columbia SC 29229.
Rest in Peace Dad. We will always miss and love you!
