Born and raised in Columbia, David was a lifelong member of Shandon Baptist Church, where he served for many years in the children’s ministry as a Sunday School teacher, sharing his love for Christ with generations of children. He was a familiar and faithful presence around the church, serving on the weekend facility operations team, praying diligently at 10 p.m. on Tuesday nights in the prayer room, and participating in the Men’s Bible Study that he loved so dearly.
Beyond the church, David’s impact reached deep into the community through his decades of leadership with Boy Scout Troop 16. As scoutmaster and mentor, he guided and encouraged hundreds of young men, helping to shape their character and faith. He also served on staff and as a scoutmaster for several National Scout Jamborees, extending his influence far beyond his local troop. David spent the majority of his adult life serving the people and businesses of his hometown as a trusted handyman who could fix just about anything. His skillful hands and servant’s heart touched countless lives through his quiet acts of service and kindness.
Remembered for his gentle spirit, humble service, and steadfast devotion to his family, faith, and community — as well as his long-suffering love for his Gamecocks — David lived a quiet but powerful testimony of love expressed through serving others, leaving a legacy that continues in the lives of those he taught, mentored, and faithfully served.
He is survived by his beloved wife for 51 years, Kay Richards; sons, Chip Richards and Chris Richards (Rachel); and granddaughters, Tinley and Edie Richards. He is also survived by his brother, Andy Richards (Jeanne) and countless other family members and friends.
Friends and loved ones are invited to a memorial service to celebrate David’s life and glorify his Savior on Friday, November 7, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Shandon Baptist Church (5250 Forest Drive, Columbia, SC 29206). A private burial service will precede the memorial in Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will follow the service in Shandon’s Gathering Place. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, and in celebration of David’s lifelong commitment to sharing the love of Christ through service, the family requests that donations be made to Steel City Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where his son serves as pastor.
Checks may be sent to: Steel City Church 290 Bigelow Street Pittsburgh, PA 15207 Online donations: www.thesteelcitychurch.com/give — select “David Richards Memorial Fund.”
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of White Oak Manor for the compassionate care and love they showed David in his last eight months.
