

Donald Dale Amis was born August 23,1932, to Thelma A. Hutchinson Amis and Melvy Ernest Amis, on a farm one mile South of Sioux Rapids, Iowa. Don graduated from Des Moines Technical High School in 1950, studying aviation mechanics along with mechanical drafting and design. Don served in the Iowa National Guard 34th Infantry Division during the Korean War. Don followed the product design vocation during most of his working life; working as a patent draftsman, designer of electric sports scoreboards, a drafter of jet engines, and a contract designer of various products. Most of his career was with a company that became Murray Outdoor Products. Don was a company engineering expert witness for snow thrower product liability claims, along with many other important responsibilities.
Don liked to work on anything mechanical and keeping his home and yard in good shape and looking good. He loved the out of doors camping, hunting, fishing, and being near or on the water. He especially loved sailing his sailboat. Don was an ordained elder in The United Presbyterian Church and a member of Lake Murray Presbyterian Church.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, three sisters, his loving wife Dorothy of almost 70 years, and his daughter Denise Dick. He is survived by his daughter Debra Roden and his son Douglas (Linda) Amis of Des Moines, Iowa; son Daniel Amis of Greenville, South Carolina; Son-in-Law Eric Dick of Carrollton, Texas; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, an extended family, and friends.
A memorial service will be held in Des Moines, Iowa at Sheridan Park United Methodist Church at 4100 E. Sheridan Avenue, at 11:00 AM on April 9, 2025 with a luncheon to follow.
