
COLUMBIA – Mrs. Dorothy “Tink” M. Morton, 92, passed away on Friday, January 16, 2015, at Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community in West Columbia, SC. Mrs. Morton was born September 10, 1922, and was raised in Kershaw, SC at the home of her parents the late Dr. William Cauthen and Iradel Burney McDowell. Mrs. Morton was the last living child of William and Iradel and was predeceased by her three brothers, Dr. William McDowell of Charleston, SC; James McDowell of Kershaw, SC; and Edwin McDowell, Sr. of Columbia, SC; and a niece, Mrs. Virginia “Ricky” Jenny of Columbia, SC. Mrs. Morton was married to the late LTC Oliver F. Morton of Gray, GA for 31 years and they made their home in the Forest Hills area of Columbia. Mrs. Morton attended Saint Mary’s College in NC in 1941 and graduated from Converse College in Spartanburg, SC in 1943. She was a member of Shandon United Methodist Church in Columbia. She was retired from Delta Airlines with over 31 years of service. As a Delta employee she worked a short time in Charleston, SC and Atlanta, GA before settling in Columbia, SC as a reservationist in the Wade Hampton Hotel on Main Street. Many of her coworkers and customers became cherished friends which have remained in contact since her retirement from Delta in October1977. Mrs. Morton was a loving wife, stepmother and aunt. She is survived by a step son, Mr. Pete (Cindy) Morton of Silver Springs, MD; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Jann Nance of Asheville, NC and three grandchildren. She is also survived by one niece, Mrs. Catherine (Carl) Cromer of Ballentine, SC and six nephews, Mr. Edwin (Vivian) McDowell, Jr. of Columbia, SC; Mr. William (Nancy)McDowell of Silver Springs, MD; Mr. David (Elizabeth) McDowell of Mount Pleasant, SC; Mr. Mike (Brenda) McDowell of Goose Creek; Mr. James (Mary) McDowell of Lancaster, SC; and Mr. Alexander (Mary) McDowell of Aldie, VA; a sister-in-law, Virginia McDowell of Kershaw and many grand nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at Kershaw City Cemetery in Kershaw, SC, on Monday, January 19, 2015 at 2:00 PM. Dunbar Funeral Home of Columbia is assisting the family. Visitation will be immediately following the services at the family home at North Matson Street, currently the home of Virginia Williams McDowell. The family wishes to express their gratitude and appreciation to the staff of Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community in West Columbia, SC and to Mrs. Latoya Bash and the rest of the staff of Solutions for Living at Home for the love, support and excellent care given to Mrs. Morton.
