

SANDY RUN - A funeral service for MSgt Edward Earl Mangum USMC (Ret.), 80, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 8, 2016, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Mr. Mangum died Wednesday, August 3, 2016. Born on November 24, 1935 in Columbia, he was a son of the late Roy Mangum and Kathryn Dent Mangum. He joined the US Marine Corps in 1952 at the age of 17. During his career, his jobs included Rescueman, Driver Operator, Heavy Equipment Operator, Section Leader, Crash Chief, Fire Chief, Fire Marshal, and instructor in the firefighting profession. While stationed in Quantico, Virginia, he helped train the White House Police in firefighting. He was the Marine Fire Chief in Da Nang, Vietnam in 1969. After being wounded in Vietnam, he was assigned his last three years in the Marine Corps Air Station in New River, North Carolina, where he was the Chief Game Warden. He retired in 1972 with the honors of: Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Letter of Commendation, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation Civil Actions Color 1st Class. After retiring from the Marines, he worked as a shift supervisor for the Crash and Fire Rescue at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport. He was a member of Sandy Run Lutheran Church. Edward was an avid fisherman and loved to travel the United States. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Elizabeth Mangum; children, Feron Mangum, Katie Zakes Wooten (Walter), and Patrick Mangum; granddaughter, Shannon Zakes; brother, Juddy Mangum; and his faithful furry companions, Freckles, Marco, and Columbus.
