COLUMBIA - A funeral service for Ellison Capers IV, 93, of Columbia, will be held at 12:00 noon Saturday, June 20, 2015, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Mr. Capers, beloved husband, father and grandfather, entered into eternal rest on Monday, June 15, 2015. Born in Columbia on November 10, 1921, he was a son of Ellison Capers III and Catherine Rice Capers. In 1947 Ellison entered USC School of Business under the G.I. Bill based on his six years of service in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1950, he received a commission of Lt. (jg) in the U.S. Naval Reserve. Upon graduating in February of 1951 with a Bachelor’s degree and the Korean War having started, he volunteered for active duty and was immediately recalled. He retired as Lieutenant Commander from the U.S. Navy with 28 years of service in July 1968. He then worked for the Division of Research and Statistical Services (Budget and Control Board) until retirement in 1981. Ellison was a “fine Southern gentleman” of good character, high morals and intelligence, capable and industrious. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, a first place winner in ballroom dancing, a snappy dresser, and a genealogist. He wrote a book entitled “Capers Connections 1648-1948”, which was published in 1992. He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth (“Betty”) Black, on September 21, 2013. They were married on April 8, 1950. Surviving are his son, Ellison Capers V; daughter, Marcia Capers Crumrine (John D.); grandchildren, Abbie Lofton Crumrine and Thomas Capers Crumrine (Megan). He adored his grandchildren and believed they gave him “hope for the future.” He was about to become a great grandfather and was really looking forward to that event. Affectionately called “Boots” by his grandchildren, he will be missed enormously. Please sign the online guestbook at www.dunbarfunerals.com.
