George Harmon Sible III

COLUMBIA - A memorial service for George H. Sible will be held Friday, January 22, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Shandon Presbyterian Church, followed by an informal reception in the atrium. George Harmon Sible, 93, died January 17, 2016 after a brief illness. Born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on June 21, 1922, his family moved to Tampa, Florida where he grew up. He moved his young family to Augusta, Georgia and worked in communications at Fort Gordon. He and his wife, Nettie, were active members of First Baptist Church for 50 years and loved swing and ballroom dancing. He also loved playing golf and played frequently after retirement as a member of Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta. In the last several years he and Nettie moved to Columbia to be closer to their daughter and joined Shandon Presbyterian Church which they attended regularly. George joined a seniors golf group, the HOGS, which played at Fort Jackson several times a week. Mr. Sible was preceded in death by his wife, Nettie Pearce Sible; sister, Katherine Sible; brother, John Sible and his parents, George Harmon Jr. and Henrietta Sible. He is survived by his daughter, Linda Olson; grandson, Grant E. Olson Jr. and nephew, David B. Smith from Tampa, Florida. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
