

COLUMBIA - Harold Reynolds, a 70 year resident of Columbia, S.C., passed away peacefully at home on April 7, 2015, at the age of 95. He was born February 6, 1920, in Lamar, S.C. His parents were the late Altamonte and Lorena Dennis Reynolds. He graduated from Lamar High School and went on to attend Wofford College. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific theater and went on to become a Lt. Commander in the Naval Reserves. After his service during World War II, he continued his education at the University of South Carolina where he graduated with a B.S. degree in Economics. Harold joined Grayson’s on Main where he enjoyed assisting patrons of all ages and excelled in finding just the right apparel for any occasion. After completing 30 years of service there, he returned to the University for post-graduate studies in Accounting and worked briefly for the State of South Carolina Department of the Treasurer. He then joined South Carolina Electric & Gas Company and worked in the Financial Planning Department there until his retirement at age 65. Harold was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as deacon, elder and elder emeritus. He considered his main contribution to the church to be in the music ministry; he sang in the church choir as a key baritone for 51 years. Continuing his love of music, he became a member of the Palmetto Mastersingers and performed with them for many years. He travelled the world with this distinguished men’s choral group, delivering beautiful concerts, one season performing for the Pope at the Vatican. He also continued to pursue his long time love of tennis well into his 80s. For the seven and one half years preceding his death, Harold lived at Atria Forest Lake Senior Living where he received excellent care and friendship from caregivers and staff and continued his singing for the other residents. A devoted husband, father and friend, he is survived by his two daughters, Carolyn Taylor (David) of Columbia, Mary Reynolds (Ravi Sawant) of Columbia; his sisters, Helen Groetzinger (Tom); three grandchildren, Erin Poole of Columbia, Stephen Taylor of Fort Mill, Ian Taylor of Marietta, Georgia; his three stepdaughters, Dianne Stevenson (Tom) of Greenville, Sharon Hodge (John) of Columbia, Alice Lutz of Tega Cay; five stepgrandchildren, Allen Stevenson and Lanie Stevenson Pilhar (Stefan) of Greenville, John and David Hodge of Columbia and Renee Lutz of Tega Cay. He is also survived by several loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 29 years, Doris Dunning; his wife of 27 years, Alice Asbill; his stepgranddaughter, Rachael Lutz and a nephew, Tommy Reynolds. He was also predeceased by his siblings, Wilburn (Anna) of Raleigh, N.C. and Kirk (Barbara) of Jacksonville, Fla. Special thanks to his caregivers at Atria; his private caregivers, Pam, Amy and Cheryl; and his long time physician, Dr. Frank Martin. A visitation will be held at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, on Thursday, April 9, 2015, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. There will be a memorial service on Friday, April 10, 2015, at 3:00 p.m. at the chapel of First Presbyterian Church. The family will greet friends after the service in the church Atrium. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
