COLUMBIA - Harold Hebinger Snuggs, Jr., 89, departed for his Heavenly home December 6, 2016 at 1:45 p.m., after a brief illness. Born February 8, 1927 in Canton, China to Harold H. Snuggs, Sr. and Grace M. Snuggs, he grew up with his missionary parents, as well as his sister, Margaret Anne, and brother, John. He came to the states, graduating in 1948 from Furman University with a B.A. in History and Political Science, and in 1950 also received a B.S. in Chemistry and Physics. He taught school for a while at Shanghai American School in Shanghai, China and later at the Isidore Newman School in New Orleans, Louisiana. Years later, he changed directions, becoming a pharmaceutical representative for Johnson & Johnson, and then in 1964, he went into the insurance business, ultimately becoming a Partner with Gardner & White until his retirement in 1992. Harold’s love for boating, camping and traveling led to 40 years of involvement with the Boy Scouts of America. During his time as Scout Master, he was awarded the “Silver Beaver” award, as well as the bronze, silver and gold “Good Shepherd” awards. During that time, he also served as a deacon at First Baptist Church. Our hearts already miss his spirited debates, his larger-than-life personality, and his devotion, but he leaves behind a legacy of love as he is survived by his wife, Bettie; his daughter, Elizabeth Snuggs Charles, MD (Ed); his grandchildren, Joey Charles, Jessica Charles, Jill Howell (Brad), Bryan Buffkin (Anna); and his great-grandchildren, Jackson and Parker Howell, and Logan and Lucas (“Hebinger” after Harold!) Buffkin. Harold was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Margaret Anne Hallman; his brother, John Mason Snuggs; infant daughter, Katherine Louis; and his son, Hal H. Snuggs, III. Visitation will be at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 8, 2016. The service will be on Friday, December 9, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Boyce Chapel of First Baptist Church with a graveside service following at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Harold’s word for you today would be to, “Keep the faith and press on for service with Jesus Christ.” Memorials may be made to New Life Children’s Home, located in Honduras, PO Box 2604, Lexington, SC 29071.
