

COLUMBIA Funeral service for Harry Lee “H.L.” Goldson Jr., 97, will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon prior to the service at the funeral home. H.L. passed away at his home on Saturday, October 18, 2014. Born in Columbia, he was a son of the late Harry L. Goldson Sr. and Minnie Waltz Goldson. He graduated from Columbia High School in 1936 and Draughon’s Business College in 1939. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS LST-77 during WWII as a Pharmacist’s Mate from 1943 to 1945. During his time in the Navy he was involved in the invasion of southern France and Anzio. H.L. retired after 39 years from Southern Railroad as a chief engineer. He was a member of Mason Lodge # 39, Railroad Retirement Club, United Transportation Union and Asbury Methodist Church. Surviving are his daughters, Elynor Aynne Wood of West Columbia, Helen Gayle Jones (Danny) of Cary, N.C.; son, James V. Goldson of Columbia; grandchildren, Shannon McWaters (Jim), Emily Goldson; and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy C. Darnell Goldson; daughter, Harriett Anderson; son, John B. Goldson; a granddaughter, Stephanie Martin; one brother; and one sister. The family wishes to thank the neighbors of St. Mark Wood for their support and kindness to their father over the last several years.
