

COLUMBIA - A funeral service for Hazel Soles will be held at 11:00 a. m. Friday, November 13, 2015 in Christ Chapel of Washington Street United Methodist Church, conducted by Dr. William Childs. A graveside service will be at Whiteville Memorial Gardens, Whiteville, NC, at 3:30 p.m. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, November 12, 2015 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Ms. Soles died Monday, November 9, 2015. Born in Whiteville, NC, she was the daughter of the late John William Soles and Margaret Watts Soles. An honor graduate of Whiteville High School and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, NC, she was professor emeritus of the University of South Carolina, College of Applied Professional Science, Department of Office Administration. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at UNC-G, was a member of the honor society of Delta Pi Epsilon, and did work toward a doctorate at USC. As of 1966, a faculty member at the University of South Carolina, she initiated instructional television in the college and played an important part in the first instructional television at the University. She developed the College Media Center and was editor of the department newsletter. She was vice president of the Zonta International Business Women’s Organization representing USC, and enjoyed ballroom dancing for ten years after retirement. For a short time, she worked with the Veterans Administration in Washington, D.C., Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada, and part-time with the accounting firm Lindsey Associates, CPA’s in Greensboro, NC. For fifteen years before coming to the University, she worked with Whiteville City Schools, Whiteville, NC, where she was president of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, president of the North Carolina Education Association and state president of Educational Secretaries for two terms; accountant for Whiteville City Schools superintendent’s office, taught math and science in the eighth grade, business education, chairman of the senior’s class and sponsor of the Whiteville High School Yearbook. Ms. Soles was a member of the Washington Street United Methodist Church in Columbia, member of the Traxler Sunday School Class, served on the Finance Committee and Board of Trustees, and served as Chairman of the Altar Guild Handbook for WSUMC. Formerly, she was a member of Whiteville United Methodist Church in Whiteville, NC, where she taught Sunday school and Adult Evening classes and was secretary to the Administrative Board. After retiring, she enjoyed traveling, especially overseas, attending concerts, town theatre productions, gardening and the Shepherd Center of Columbia. She is survived by two sons, Roger William Harrelson (Debbie) of Columbia, SC, and Milton John Harrelson (Annice) of Matthews, NC; three granddaughters, Kimberly Ann Welp (Drew) of Chapin, SC, Margaret Elizabeth Harrelson and Rebecca Louise Harrelson, both of Matthews, NC; great grandchild, William “Hamp” Hamilton Welp; niece, Jan Soles of Raleigh, NC; nephew, William Roger Soles, Jr. of Greensboro, NC; great niece, Reid Soles and one great nephew, William Roger Soles, III, of Greensboro, NC. She was predeceased by her son, Victor Jennings Harrelson (1984); two sisters, Dr. Myrtle Erck and Kathleen Soles; brother, William Roger Soles of Greensboro, NC.
