WEST COLUMBIA - Henry “Harry” DeSaussure Bull Jr. died Monday, April 19, 2021, after an extended illness. Funeral service and burial will be held with family on Saturday, April 24, 2021, at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Columbia.
Harry was born June 30, 1930, in Charleston, S.C., and was one of seven children of Rev. Henry DeSaussure and Gertrude Cornish Bull. He grew up in Georgetown, S.C., and spent summers on Pawley’s Island. Before graduating from the University of South Carolina in 1952, he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, the Canterbury Club and University Chorus. He proudly served his country and retired as a commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve with a notable tour aboard the USS Missouri in the Korean Conflict. He began working a more than 40-year career as a stockbroker with Harris Upham and Company.
With a keen interest in history, family and ancestry, he was a part of the Society of the Colonial Wars, First Families of South Carolina, Barons of the Magna Carta, and the Society of the Bull Family of Ashley Hall. He served as the president of the Columbia Music Festival. Under his leadership, the foundation was laid for what is now the S.C. Philharmonic Orchestra. He was a long-time member at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, singing in the choir for more than 20 years, leading church docents to give tours of the cathedral and graveyard and working with church archives. He and Brantley loved to dance in the Tarantella and Quadrille clubs.
Harry is survived by his wife of 64 years, Anne Brantley Clare Bull; children, Henry Bull III (Janet), Timothy Bull (Darah), Anne Bull Marro, Stephen Bull, Laura Bull Baker (Jacob); sister, Sarah Bull Clarkson; ten grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Still Hopes, Solutions and Hospice staff for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, the family asks a donation be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation or Trinity Episcopal Cathedral (Columbia, S.C.) in his memory.
