

On Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020, loving father and grandfather, Herman Randolph Fuller, Sr., passed away peacefully at Warriors Walk in Columbia, SC, at the age of 93. Born June 20, 1926, in Dawkins, SC, he was the son of Willie Lee Fuller and Lottie Louise (DeHihns) Fuller. He grew up on a farm, one of 10 siblings. He worked hard contributing to the good of his family and community.
Herman’s military career began during World War II in 1944, when he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve V6 Program. He reported for active duty and was assigned to Amphibious Landing Craft and Landing Ships Training at Little Creek, Virginia. He served on the United States Ship LSM 305 and was appointed Able Seaman, Seaman Second Class, Seaman First Class, and Coxwain (Landing Craft).
After the war, Herman used the GI bill to put himself through college at the University of South Carolina, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.
On April 9, 1957, he enlisted in Headquarters Detachment, SC Army National Guard. He served with this unit until his retirement in 1986. His awards and decorations include being an Honor Graduate of Palmetto Military Academy, 1958; U.S. Meritorious Service Medal; American Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal; Armed Selective Service System Meritorious Service Medal; South Carolina Active State Service Medal (25 years); and, the South Carolina Guardsman Retirement Medal.
Herman loved Gamecock football and basketball, spending time with his family, and taking care of others as long as he was able.
Herman was predeceased by his parents; siblings Louis, Nellie (Sharpe), Doug, Louise (Joles), Robert, Ham, Dorothy, James, and Thomas. He is survived by his daughter Donna (Bill) Hicks, daughter Diane (Eddie) Murphy, son Randolph (Linda) Fuller; six grandchildren, Shannon Hicks Benarroch, Matthew Yarbrough, Brittany (Greg) Hunter, Zack (Kaiti) Fuller, Stewart (Victoria) Fuller, Julia Fuller; 6 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 am Monday, February 10, 2020 at First Christian Church with burial and military honors to follow at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
