

COLUMBIA - Hugh William “Bill” Carter, Jr. passed away Wednesday April 15, 2015 at the age of 80. Born in Pinehurst, N.C., he was the son of the late Hugh and Libbie Carter. After a memorable childhood in Pinehurst, he graduated from Woodberry Forest School in Virginia and then from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he met his wife, Margaret, the love of his life. He had a long and distinguished career in the banking industry in North and South Carolina, retiring in 1999 to his home in Columbia. He always had a tremendous love of the outdoors where he was always game for a hike or canoe trip and was very active with the SC Association of Naturalists. He loved his Kiwanis Club and was an active member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club in Columbia. He was an avid reader, often with his beloved dog, Charlotte, at his side. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Margaret; as well as sons, Bill (Trina) and Jimmy (Margaret) all of Columbia, Tom (Alex) of New York City. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Cille Clark (Emery), Liza Carter, Maggie Carter, Sarah Carter, Percy Carter, Gus Carter, Keenie Carter, Hudson Carter, Kip Carter, Ileana Carter and Petal Carter; and great-granddaughter, Ella Katharine. He was predeceased by his sisters, Betsy and Mary Anne. A memorial service for Bill will take place at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral on Friday, April 17, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. with a reception to follow in Satterlee Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Harvest Hope Food Bank, 2220 Shop Road, Columbia, SC 29201 or to a charity of one’s choice.
