COLUMBIA - A graveside service will be held for Ivan Gottlieb at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 25 in Hebrew Benevolent Society Cemetery officiated by Rabbi Jonathan Case of Beth Shalom Synagogue in Columbia, S.C. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
Mr. Gottlieb passed away on Monday, August 23, 2021. Born May 22, 1927, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of Minnie and John Gottlieb, who immigrated from Russia as children. He moved to Columbia, S.C., at the age of three and spent the majority of his life there, and became the ultimate Gamecock fan.
He was one of The Greatest Generation as a Merchant Marine during WWII. After his military service, he built a career in the real estate business and was involved in countless endeavors in Columbia and beyond. He didn’t just build things, he built relationships that lasted his entire lifetime. He never met a stranger or an obstacle that he didn’t think he could overcome.
He married Sandy Arnold when he was 21 years old and they spent 60 years together until she passed in 2010. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Penni and Larry Nadel, Jon and Ruth Gottlieb, Carole Gottlieb, and Kristy and Tom Powell. He was crazy about his grandchildren, Leila and Jay Bressler, Lindsay and Shane Rabin, Jake Gottlieb, Dannah Gottlieb, Rachel and Sam Mills, Haley Powell, Allie Powell, and Skylar Powell. He felt unbelievably lucky to have been able to enjoy his great-grandchildren, Sandy and Alexa Bressler as well as Lance, Penn, and Sallie Rabin. He was predeceased by his daughter, Laurie Elaine Gottlieb as well as his sister, Doris, and brothers, Ralph and George.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff, nurses and CNAs at LifeCare of Columbia for their kindness and loving care.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Beth Shalom Synagogue or the American Cancer Society.
