John Calvin Griggs Jr.

COLUMBIA - A service celebrating the life of John Calvin Griggs, Jr., 72, will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, February 1st, 2024 at Shandon United Methodist Church. A reception will follow in Player Hall.

John died Sunday, January 28th, 2024 after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born in Conway, SC, he was the son of the late John Calvin Griggs and Helma Napier Griggs. A graduate of Conway High School, he received his bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina. He worked as a local bank executive in the Grand Strand area for nearly 40 years. Passionate about serving his community, John served on the Board of Advisors for the Grand Strand Water and Sewer Authority, the Board of Visitors for the Wall School of Business at Coastal Carolina University, and numerous other nonprofit organizations. Before moving to Columbia and joining Shandon UMC, he was a member of Trinity UMC in Conway, SC. He had many joys in life, including golfing, hunting, fishing, gardening and cheering on the Gamecocks. However, he had no greater joy than spending time with his friends and beloved family.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Lynne Watts Griggs; son, John C. Griggs III and his wife, Catherine Howard Griggs; two grandchildren, John William “Jack” Griggs and Eleanor Rose “Ellie” Griggs; sisters, Susan Griggs Barron and Sara Griggs Whetstone; and numerous nieces and nephews.
