Johnny Arthur Spotts, Sr., 85, of Columbia, South Carolina, passed unexpectedly on October 27, 2024. Johnny was born on December 10, 1938, in Newberry, South Carolina to the late George and Margaret Spotts.
Johnny was a painter by trade and was in business with his brother, Donald, until they both retired. The only purchase he ever made on credit was his home. He was a hard-working, determined man who defied the odds throughout his life.
In his later years, Johnny’s passion in life was lawn care and assisting the blind community. Yard work took him a considerable amount of time because he was so meticulous. At home, he enjoyed watching westerns and spending time with his daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Johnny was a man who was happy with the simple things in life and preferred a home cooked meal and sleeping in his own bed over just about anything else. Although, once his granddaughter, Mandy, bought a house down the street from him, he loved just sitting in the garage (“the den”), having a cup of coffee, and talking about life.
For over 50 years, he was married to the love of his life, Betty Jernigan Spotts, who passed in 2010. For the last 30 years, Johnny has been known as “Poppy” to his family and friends.
Johnny is survived by his daughter, Sue Spotts Pittman (Tony) of Lugoff, South Carolina; granddaughter, Amanda N. Pittman of Columbia, South Carolina; granddaughter, Lauren Valentine (Shaun) of Lugoff, South Carolina; grandson, Matthew Spotts (Lillian) of Columbia, South Carolina; great-grandchildren, Addison, Arden, and Teagen; and brother, Bobby.
He is predeceased by his wife, Betty; son, Johnny Arthur Spotts, Jr.; and several siblings.
Johnny was a long-time member of Calvary Baptist Church on South Kilbourne where he previously served on the grounds committee, kitchen committee, baptism committee, Lord’s supper committee, and drove the church bus. His service will be held there on Friday, November 1, 2024, at 1:00PM. Visitation will be held in the hour immediately prior to the funeral service.
Memorial donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church.
