

LEXINGTON - Kathryn Cogburn Key, 76, died Thursday, October 08, 2015, at the Presbyterian Retirement Community in Lexington. Kathryn Key was born in Greenwood, SC, on April 6, 1939 to the late William S. Cogburn and Edith Cobb Cogburn Ficklin. She was an accomplished musician from an early age and devoted her life to leading the people of God in worship. She was a Cum Laude graduate of Furman University in 1961, receiving a BA in Music, majoring in Piano. She earned a Masters in Organ Performance from the University of South Carolina in 1983. While at Furman she accompanied the Concert Choir and studied organ for two years. She served as organist at Earl Street Baptist Church in Greenville from 1959-60, while also presenting her junior and senior recitals. After graduation, Kathryn served as Music Associate and Organist at First Baptist Church in Columbia from 1961 until 1962. She served as president of the Morning Music Club in Columbia in 1971. She taught piano privately until her call to serve as Director of Music, organist and choir director at Shandon Presbyterian Church from 1973 until her retirement in 2001. She was a gifted service organist, glorifying God in hymn and anthem, and encouraging vocalists and handbell ringers of every age and ability. Kathryn was predeceased by her step-father, John T. Ficklin of Greenwood. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Samuel DePass Key of Columbia, SC; her two sons, Robert S. Key of Clemson, SC and the Rev. Dr. Douglass D. Key and his wife, Kathy of Clover, SC; grandson, Thomas Key of Clover, SC and brother, William S. Cogburn, Jr. of Honea Path, SC. Memorials may be made to Shandon Presbyterian Church, 607 Woodrow Street, Columbia, SC 29205. The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 10, 2015, for 5 until 7:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 11 at Shandon Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Franklin Fant and the Rev. Dr. David Cozad officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church memorial garden.
