
Kathryn Eddy Niggel, 95, passed away peacefully at Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community on February 3, 2021, in the presence of her two loving sons, George Michael Niggel of Columbia and Joseph Andrew Niggel (Sabrina) of Landis, NC. Mrs. Niggel was preceded in death by her husband, George Modlin Niggel.
Born in Charleston, SC, she was the daughter of the late Andrew James Eddy and Ruth Lee Knox Eddy. She graduated Memminger High School in Charleston and earned a BA from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1946. Mrs. Niggel then earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Columbia University in New York City.
In addition to her work in child welfare at Epworth Children’s Home in Columbia, she served as an adoptions supervisor in Toronto, Canada. She also acted as a student supervisor for the School of Social Work at the University of Toronto.
Later, Mrs. Niggel pursued an avid interest in antiques. She acquired a vast knowledge of craftmanship and design and enjoyed attending auctions with her family. A member of the New England Appraisers Association, she dealt in antiques for many years at City Market Antique Mall and Columbia Antiques Mall.
Mrs. Niggel was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Walsh Guild.
A private graveside service for Mrs. Niggel was held at St. Peters Catholic Cemetery in Columbia, SC. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 3512 Devine St., Columbia SC 29205.
