

COLUMBIA Lloyd S. Liles, 92, died Wednesday, October 31, 2018. Born in Middlesex, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Edmond H. Liles Sr. and Minnie Batts Liles. Lloyd served in the US Navy and took early retirement from Southern Bell where he served as an executive in Anderson, Charleston, Greenville and Columbia. Since that date, he has been active in other business interests in North and South Carolina.
Active in community and civic affairs throughout the state, he served on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors in Anderson, Charleston and Greenville. Always active in United Way activities, he served as campaign Chairman in Anderson, United Way president and chairman in Charleston and later served as president of the South Carolina Association of United Ways. He was a member of the Palmetto Society of the United Way, the Palmetto Club, the Spring Valley Country Club in Columbia, the Poinsett Club in Greenville, the Hibernian Society, the New England Society and the Charleston Club in Charleston. He was a member of the Executive Club in Columbia.
Long active at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he graduated with a BS Degree in Commerce, he was a lifetime member of the University of North Carolina’s Chancellor’s Club and a member of the Board of Visitors of that University. He also set up a scholarship fund to assist needy students at UNC. He was a member of Northeast Presbyterian Church.
Having a longtime interest in animal life, including taking several safaris in Africa, he served on the Riverbanks Zoo & Garden’s Society board for many years and on the Commission Board, where he served as Chairman. He was an avid traveler and visited all Seven Wonders of the World.
He and his loving wife of 66 years, Doris Nauful Liles, enjoyed taking many trips abroad. He is survived by his wife and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Edmond H. Liles Jr and his sister, Angelia Bartlett.
A funeral service for Mr. Liles will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 5, 2018, at Northeast Presbyterian Church, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Rev. Dr. George Crow will officiate. Pallbearers will be Ed Holler, Grayson Meetze Jr., Hal Liles, Kemp Liles, Terry Williams, John Farmer, Doug Yeatts and John Medlin. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
