Mrs. Luise Eitel Peake-Dickerman

COLUMBIA Luise Eitel Peake-Dickerman was born in 1925 in Koenigsberg, East Prussia, and died on Thursday, January 14, 2016, at Palmetto Health Baptist in Columbia. She received her Master’s in piano performance at Chicago Musical College where her teachers included Rudolph Ganz. She received her doctorate in musicology from Columbia University in New York City. For many years, since 1968 she was professor at the University of South Carolina School of Music, leaving full-time employment as Distinguished Professor Emerita in 1994 and continuing part-time for many years. She was a member of Columbia World Affairs Council, Partners of the Americas, League of Women Voters, and Shepherd’s Center of Columbia. She is the author of several books, her specialty being song cycles of Schubert as well as other composers. She was a kind and generous person all her life and she will be greatly missed by her extended family and all those who knew her. She is survived by her son, William A. Peake and wife, Roxanne of Lilburn, GA; her sister, Eleonore Eitel Hansen of East Peoria, IL; her stepdaughters, Becky Thompson (Peter) and Laura Spikes (John); and close friend, Heidi Lux. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Lois Stringer, Neddie Eitel; brother-in-law, Charles Kramer; and nieces and nephews, Emily Wechsler, Richard Eitel, Jennifer Jackey, E. Michael Hansen, Carl Hansen, Karen Hover-Amar, S. Franz Hover, and Anne Severns. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilhelm and Anne-Marie Eitel; her brothers, J. Michael and Franz Eitel; her sister, Dorothea Eitel Hover Kramer; her son, T. Christian Peake; her first husband, Joseph Sandy Peake; and her second husband, Allen Briggs Dickerman. In lieu of flowers, she would like donations to be made to Planned Parenthood, Riverbanks Zoo, University of South Carolina School of Music, or to any of the organizations listed above. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, January 23, 2016, at Dunbar Funeral Home, 3926 Devine Street, Columbia, SC. A reception will follow.
