

Marcia was born October 22, 1940 in Elgin, Illinois to Arnold and Gladys Ehlert. The family moved to Des Moines, Iowa while Marcia was a child where she received an excellent education that encouraged her lifelong love of curiosity and learning. She attended Iowa State University where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta social sorority. She graduated from Drake University with a degree in Economics.
After graduation, Marcia moved to Kansas City where she began her career in computer system design and programming. While in Kansas City she met John Stine and they married October 12, 1963 and celebrated more than 50 anniversaries until his death in 2016. John’s pursuit of history and teaching led them to Columbia where he received his PhD at USC.
Marcia’s last position before her retirement was Assistant Director of Legislative Printing for the State of SC.
During their marriage, John and Marcia were passionate about seeing the world and traveled extensively, visiting all seven continents. They were also passionate about animals and supported many organizations that cared for their wellbeing. There was usually a cat and/or dog in the Stine household.
Marcia was a lover of the arts and supported many local arts organizations including Columbia Museum of Art, SC Philharmonic and Columbia Children’s Theatre.
Marcia was especially fond of good wine and a vocal proponent for the proper use of grammar.
Marcia is survived by her sister Sonja (Steve) Bakalyar of Napa, California, niece Elizabeth Bakalyar Logan as well as her sister-in-law Mary (Carl) Murry of Stockton, Missouri. She is pre-deceased by her husband John Stine and nephew Matthew Bakalyar.
Private graveside services will be held at the Trinity Episcopal Cathedral columbarium.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
