

Burley, 93, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 4, 2018
at Heyward Street United Methodist Church, with burial in
Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends
from 9:30 until 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the church.
Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the
family.
Mrs. Burley passed away Sunday, July 29, 2018. Born in
Tallahassee, Florida on January 13, 1925, she was a daughter
of the late George Henson Smith and Bunita Morrow Smith.
Following the early death of her parents, Margaret was reared
by her grandmother Mary Frances “Fanny” Smith and aunt
Estelle Smith. She was a member of Heyward Street United
Methodist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class, and
was also an active member of the United Methodist Women.
Margaret retired in 1987 from the University of South Carolina
Geography Department as an administrative assistant. She
enjoyed gardening and walking and was very passionate about
recycling, using her walks to help keep the Shandon community
clean and manicured. She was an accomplished seamstress who
assisted interior decorators in designing and sewing. Most
important of all her accomplishments in life was her family. She
would drop anything to assist her husband or children if they
were in need.
Surviving are her daughter, Martha B. Donehue (Tom); sons,
C. Carroll Burley, Jr. (Jennifer), Rev. John D. Burley (Gayle) and
George S. Burley (Anne); seven grandchildren; and fourteen
great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband
of 65 years, Charles Carroll Burley, Sr., sisters Mamie Morrow Smith
Anderson and Doris Browning Raines, brothers George H. Smith and
G. Everett Browning, grandmother Mary Frances ”Fanny” Smith and
aunt Estelle Smith. Memorials may be made to Heyward Street United
