Margaret Ann “Peggy” Ledlie, 82, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, February 5, 2024. A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, February 15th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 3512 Devine Street, Columbia, SC. The family will receive guests at a reception to follow at the church.
Peggy lived a life filled with family and friends. She was born November 20, 1941 in Port Huron, Michigan to the late James C. and Anna Marie Potts. She attended St. Stephens High School and Eastern Michigan University where she received a degree in Early Childhood Education. Peggy was a life-long teacher who shared both her heart and her knowledge with her students. She continued to perfect her craft throughout her career, receiving her Master’s in Education with honors from the University of South Carolina. Peggy also received her National Board Certification. Peggy spent decades teaching at Satchel Ford Elementary School where she was awarded the Teacher of the Year in 1989. Her tremendous heart for helping children, especially those with special needs, was her passion. With her loving patience and tremendous work ethic, Peggy was able to help children be successful in the classroom and beyond. It was a common occurrence in the Ledlie household to be stopped in the grocery store or a restaurant by former students asking for a hug and expressing their thanks for the care Peggy gave them.
Peggy was an officer of Kappa Kappa Iota Teacher Sorority and was a South Carolina Master Gardener. She also volunteered for many years with the SC Commission for the Blind, reading books and storytelling over the radio.
Family was the most important part of Peggy’s life. She first met her beloved John during “Boat Night” in Port Huron on the eve of the Port Huron-to-Mackinac boat race. Prior to setting sail the next morning, John called every Potts in the phone book until reaching Peggy. They made plans to meet again … and so began their sixty-year love affair. The next decades were filled with adventures, kids, and family life. In her retirement, Peggy and John travelled extensively to Europe, the Mediterranean, Australia, and cruised to Alaska, through the Caribbean and up to Novia Scotia. The entire family looked forward to the annual family vacation at Edisto Beach.
Peggy was predeceased in death by her parents; her sister, Mary Winn Rhadigan; her daughter, Mary; her brother-in-law, Earl, and sister-in-law, Patricia Smith; son-in-law, Craig Thompson; and her husband, John William Ledlie. She is survived by two daughters Cara Condra (Gregg), Laura Ledlie, and son James Ledlie (Caroline); and grandchildren Cameron, Jack, Kristen, Ivy, James William, and Bernie, “sister” Sheila Gadsden, brother-in-law Jim Rhadigan, and many nieces and nephews.
The family asks, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the SC Commission for the Blind.
The family wishes to thank Sheila Gadsden for her many years of care for both “Captain” John and “Queen” Peggy Ledlie, Dr. Brad Word, Dr. David Greenhouse, Cessandra Carter and the amazing staff of Laurel Crest Memory Care, and our Medway family.
