My heartfelt condolences to the Hallman family. It had been my pleasure and honor to help care for Mrs. Hallman's eyes over the past 25 years. She was an amazing lady and will be sorely missed by our practice.

When I was about 10-12 years old I would visit Aunt Mary Helen and Ricky.  They lived next door.  Ricky would always be on the floor making his school projects.  Aunt Mary Helen would always include me at the little table for two at lunch time. 

Heaven is a happier place now that she is there.

On another day of their visit, we explored tamer mountains in the hills near Denver where my husband grew up. His dad had two four-wheelers that we used to tour a little through the nearby wooded hills. After a brief instruction (Mary Helen had never driven anything like a motorcycle before) we were off. Even their dog rode along! All went well until Mom apparently wasn’t looking and suddenly dove off the dirt road about 10’ down the hill, stopping only when she hit a tree! Mary Helen was paying more attention to her driving and was terrified when her sister ran off the road. After making sure no one was hurt, we couldn’t stop laughing as my father-in-law lugged the four-wheeler back up onto the road. I’m sure he was wondering if all the people in SC were this crazy! 

My visits to SC soon became infrequent with a family and a business to care for. But on each visit, after flying into Charlotte, the first stop I made was to visit Mary Helen. She was always happy and gracious in her apartment, and it was a joy to catch up. As the years progressed, it became more difficult to visit, and I began writing her weekly letters, often just writing only about my humdrum life. She read them however, all the photos, stickers and doodles included and seemed to enjoy them. I’ll miss the time we both spent connecting across the distance and will forever remember her with love.

Mary Helen was my aunt, my mother’s only sibling. During my childhood she seemed calm and collected at all times and always gave me the best birthday and Christmas presents. I still remember the sweater vest she gave me during high school! 

She was quiet and very restrained in her mannerisms, but we knew she loved us and we certainly loved her. In the working world for most of her adulthood, she made sure to attend our holiday family dinners. We used to joke when inviting her that her ‘ticket’ to the meal was a plate of her delicious cream cheese brownies. She always happily obliged our requests and occasionally made her green Jello salad, too. Today I treasure those recipes, written in her hand. 

After college I moved to Colorado with a job. With my dad’s passing, Mary Helen and Mom became closer, spending lots of fun time shopping and eating out. They seemed to have fun no matter what they were doing! They both visited me in Colorado when my son was a baby. Wanting to give them the full Colorado experience, my husband and I took them to the nearest mountain at 14,266 feet above sea level. Mt. Evans, as it was called then, has the highest paved road in North America, so no hiking was involved. It was the month of May, but as we progressed on this recently plowed road, much above tree line, the views were obscured by the 10’ piles of snow on either shoulder, made by the snowplows. Mary Helen was amazed at the amount of snow, so we just had to find a pull-off so she could throw a snowball or two! At the end of the road near the top of the mountain, we ran into thick falling snow – Mary Helen and mom couldn’t believe it! They ran around like kids while we laughed with them.

Hi from Santa Fe, New Mexico! It's your cousin, Tami Hallman. I'm so sorry to hear about Mary Helen's passing. I was just asking Chris about her in early December! Visiting with her was one of my favorite childhood memories. I loved having Aunt Mary Helen and Uncle Aubrey as our next door neighbors on Summerlea Drive. I used to go over and visit with Aunt Mary Helen. I remember being with her in the kitchen, and I think I stayed over one night because Mom had to go out of town. She was always so sweet to me! In their front yard by the stream (where I used to play in the big concrete culvert that ran under the street) was a tulip poplar tree. One of the last times I was in Columbia, we drove through the neighborhood, and that tree was still there! The sidewalk up to the Horlachers' house was my highway.
