Michael Charles Goddard, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully at his home on December 25, 2025, at the age of 76. Born on August 29, 1949, in Brooklyn, New York, Michael built a life defined by devotion to family, integrity, quiet humor, and steadfast loyalty—to those he loved and to the teams he cheered.
Michael was the cherished husband of Cecily Goddard, his wife of 53 years. Together they raised two sons of whom he was endlessly proud: Matthew Goddard and his wife, Mary Walker, and Mark Goddard and his wife, Laura. “Pop Mike” took particular joy in his grandchildren—Noah, Hayes, Molly, and Addison—whose games, competitions, performances, and milestones were the highlights of his days. He is also survived by his brothers, John Goddard, Jr., (Sandy), Kevin Goddard (Tasha), and Brian Goddard (Lisa), and his sister-in-law Pam Crandall (Pete). He was predeceased by his parents, Eleanor and John H. Goddard.
A graduate of Ramapo Regional High School in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, Michael went on to earn his degree from Providence College in 1971. He served honorably in the United States National Guard, reflecting a lifelong sense of duty and commitment to service.
Michael’s greatest happiness came from the sidelines and the audience—watching his sons and, in recent years, his grandchildren on playing fields and stages. He was a devoted and enthusiastic presence, a steady encourager who celebrated effort, teamwork, and joy above all. A diehard New York Yankees fan, Michael rarely missed a game, faithfully watching or following nearly every matchup throughout the season. His love of the Yankees was a thread that connected years, seasons, and generations.
A celebration of Michael’s life will be held at Dunbar Funeral Home located at 3926 Devine Street, Columbia, SC 29205 on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. A visitation with the family will follow immediately after the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to his favorite charity, Breakthrough T1D (formerly Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) www.BreakthroughT1D.org, in his memory.
Michael will be remembered for his warmth, and his deep love for his family. His legacy lives on in the people he guided, the values he instilled, and the countless moments of pride and joy he shared.
