

COLUMBIA – Patricia Hough Pollard, 84, daughter of the late Charlie Coleman Hough and Eda Lee Bolton Hough of Laurens, South Carolina, passed away Monday, February 5, 2018. An artist and art teacher; she received her B.A degree from the University of South Carolina and a Master’s Degree as well as further studies through Temple University and study abroad programs.
Mrs. Pollard taught art in public schools for 25 years, 10 years at Eau Claire High School where the students voted to dedicate the High school yearbook to her; E.L. Wright Middle School for 15 years where she was selected as “Teacher of the Year ” and as Adjunct professor in the Art Department at Columbia College. Many of her former students have remained treasured life-long friends.
Her art work has received many awards. Her paintings hang in public and private collections both locally, nationally and internationally. Her painting “Come Unto Me” was used on the cover of Eastminster Presbyterian’s book celebrating the history of Eastminster, Eastminster Jubilee, The First Fifty Years. Her painting depicting the pond and fountain at Still Hopes Retirement Community were made into cards and sold to benefit the Residence Assistance Fund. “The Fountain” painting was also used as the cover for the Still Hopes History book. Patricia also did a painting commemorating the peacocks that once roamed the grounds of Still Hopes and now hangs in the parlor of the Guignard Mansion. Mrs. Pollard was a “Member in Excellence” of the South Carolina Watercolor society and was a past member of the Trenholm Artist Guild. As well, serving as the organization’s Vice President and later, as secretary. She also belonged to the National Art Education Association and the South Carolina Art Education Association, a past member of the American Watercolor Society and one- time member of the Southern Watercolor Society.
She was a member of the Colonial Dames Seventeenth Century and a member of the National Society of Magna Carta, most noble Order of the Garter and the Colonial Order of the Crown, Kappa Pi National Art Education fraternity and former member of Delta Kappa Gamma National Honorary Education organization.
Patricia loved her family and her wonderful friends; made up of fellow teachers, bridge club members in addition to high school and college classmates. Some of her special close friends are: Joyce Hearn, Jane Williams, Pat and Jerry Fuller, B. J. Shoe, Elaine Hill, Ellen Furr, Mr. and Mrs. Ken Ormand, Myra Bristol and long -time employee, Bessy Bracey and many others.
When asked what was her favorite role in life, Mrs. Pollard always replied, “raising my daughter, Suzanne”. She referred to her daughter as, “my precious Suzanne”.
She is survived by Suzanne, her husband Miguel and two wonderful grandchildren, Patricia - named for her “G-ma” and her grandson, Miguel, all of Raleigh, North Carolina and Chiclana de la Frontera, Spain. Also, two nieces, Coleman Hough of New York and California and Lee Parr and her husband, Jeremy, and a great- niece, Kathryn and two great- nephews, Christopher and William of Kent, England. Mrs. Pollard was pre-deceased by her beloved brother, Kenneth Edgeworth Hough of Old Bailey Island, Maine.
Patricia was a longtime member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church where her service will be held. First for her family in Eastminster’s Memorial Garden and then for her family and friends in the sanctuary at Eastminster this Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Also a reception in the parlor of the Mansion at Still Hopes will be held on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. following the church service.
