Sherrill Clement Smith

COLUMBIA - A funeral service for Sherrill Clement Smith, 81, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 8, 2016, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Mr. Smith passed away at home on Tuesday, December 6, 2016. Born on May 31, 1935 in Washington, Georgia, he was a son of the late Clemon Truitt Smith and Minnie Lee Denard Smith. He retired from Norfolk Southern Railway after 36 years of service. He was known by his co-workers as “Carolina.” He served in the U.S. National Guard 51st Military Police. He was a member of Eau Claire Masonic Lodge #344. He was also a member of the South Carolina State Constable Association, a lifelong member of the NRA and had a great love for the outdoors. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Lenora Sturgeon Smith; daughters, Teresa Thomas and her husband, Jim, of Columbia and Denise Smith of Columbia; grandchildren, Rebekah Thomas Garbett and her husband, Danny, of Columbia and Brett Thomas and his wife, Sallie, of Columbia; great-grandsons, Carter and Thomas Garbett; and mother-in-law, Valerie Sturgeon of Darlington.
