Born on November 13, 1931, in Marshall, Oklahoma, Sylvia grew up with strong roots that shaped the faithful and service-filled life she would go on to lead. She graduated from Hugo High School in 1949 and continued her education at Oklahoma Baptist University, graduating in 1953. Answering a calling on her heart, she attended New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary from 1954 to 1956, preparing for a life devoted to ministry and mission work.
In 1955, Sylvia married the love of her life, James Edward Foster, beginning a partnership grounded in faith, purpose, and devotion. Together, they built a life centered on serving others and sharing the Gospel. James preceded her in death.
Sylvia’s life was a testament to her calling. She served faithfully through the International Mission Board beginning in 1963, taking her across the world to places such as Ghana, West Africa; Madrid, Spain; and both West Berlin, Hamburg, Germany, and Copenhagen, Denmark. Through her work, she shared her faith, built meaningful relationships, and left a lasting impact on countless lives. She retired in 1995 and returned to Columbia, South Carolina, where she continued to live out her faith in everyday ways.
She was known for her strong biblical foundation and her passion for teaching others. Sylvia led private Bible studies, mentored women through ministries, and never missed an opportunity to share her faith. She was a devoted church member, actively involved in church camps and mission efforts, always encouraging others to grow in their walk with God.
Beyond her ministry, Sylvia found joy in the simple and beautiful things in life. Even in retirement, she felt called to start a ministry connected with India and made a trip there. She loved gardening and had a special appreciation for nature and birds. Later in life, she embraced new technology as a way to stay connected with friends around the world—a reflection of her lifelong commitment to relationships. She was also gifted with her hands, sewing and knitting with care, including making sailor hats and other crafts for those she loved.
Above all, Sylvia was devoted to her family. She had a warm presence, a great sense of humor, and a spirit marked by honesty and love. She poured herself into her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, always putting God first and family close behind.
She is survived by her siblings, Cecile Nichols and Iris Bonds. She was preceded in death by her brother, James Crawford.
Sylvia leaves behind a loving family, including her children: Carole Jones (Keith) of Blythewood, SC; Stephen Foster (Debbie) of Glenville, NC; and Mark Foster (Cheri) of Blythewood, SC. She is also survived by her grandchildren Nicholas Jones (Meagan), Kristi Frye (George), and Jason Foster (Caroline), along with her cherished great-grandchildren Rosemarie Frye, James Frye, William Foster, Nessa Jones, Andrew Foster, and Thomas Foster.
Sylvia June Crawford Foster lived a life of purpose, faith, and love. She put God above all else and shared that love generously with everyone she met. Her legacy of faith and service will continue to live on through her family and the many lives she touched around the world.
