
COLUMBIA - A memorial service for Thomas Seward Smith, 54, will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 13, 2016 at St. Michael and All Angels’ Episcopal Church, 6408 Bridgewood Rd., Columbia, SC, with burial in the churchyard. The family will receive friends following the service. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
Tommy died Wednesday, August 3, 2016. Born in Kingsville, Texas, he was the son of Judith Schenkel Smith and the late Commander Eugene Thomas Smith. He attended Midlands Technical College. He was employed by the SC Department of Mental Health and as a very skilled remodeler prior to his health problems. Tommy was a talented carpenter, sheet metal mechanic, and building visionary. He was an avid reader, medieval reenactor and NASCAR fan. He was passionate about music and his rich baritone voice resonated in the St. Michael and All Angels’ Episcopal Church choir.
Surviving are his sons, Christopher T. Smith and Timothy C. Smith of Columbia; mother, Judith Schenkel Smith of Columbia; sister, Sarah Collier (Mark) of Lake Lure, North Carolina; niece, Lauren Glover (Michael); nephew, Ryan McAbee; great-nephews, Wyatt Jones and Jackson McAbee all of Jacksonville, Florida; aunt, Virginia Mergner and cousins of Durham, North Carolina; a bonus sister, Janet Feimster of Columbia; bonus brothers, Edward Land of Hampton, Virginia and Michael Fay of Atlanta, Georgia.
He was predeceased by his father, E.T. Smith; and a son, Nicholas Davis Smith.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Michael and All Angels’ Episcopal Church.
